SmCo Electromechanical Systems.
SNT Group designs and develops permanent magnet motors, joint actuators, servo systems, and compressor drives built around Samarium Cobalt technology, engineered for the thermal demands, duty cycles, and performance requirements of robotics, electric vehicles, and industrial platforms.
Why Samarium Cobalt?
Most permanent magnet motor designs rely on neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB), a capable material that degrades under sustained heat and requires protective coatings against corrosion. Samarium Cobalt operates at temperatures exceeding 350°C, resists corrosion without coatings, and maintains magnetic strength through repeated thermal cycling. For applications where motors run continuously, generate heat, and cannot fail, SmCo is the engineering choice.
Humanoid Robot Joint Actuator Systems
Joint actuator systems are the primary movement architecture of advanced humanoid robots. SNT develops complete actuator systems integrating a SmCo rotor assembly, high-efficiency stator, encoder, harmonic drive interface, and thermal management architecture. These systems operate continuously, generate sustained heat, and must perform reliably across tens of millions of cycles.
System Configuration
Each actuator typically contains 8–24 SmCo arc segments in Sm2Co17 grades ranging from 28–32 MGOe. A single humanoid platform may require 12–20 major actuators and 20–40 additional precision motion systems. Installation points include shoulder, hip, and knee joints.
Performance Characteristics
High torque density in compact mechanical envelopes. Continuous-duty reliability without performance degradation. Resistance to demagnetization under repeated thermal cycling. Long operational service life in high-cycle environments.
Precision Servo Motor Systems
Servo motors provide precise positioning and repeatable motion across robotic arms, end effectors, gripper systems, and CNC axes. These applications demand stable magnetic output over long service intervals, given the fact that small changes in magnetic performance translate directly into positioning error. SNT servo systems integrate a SmCo rotor assembly, precision stator, encoder systems, drive electronics, and motion-control interfaces.
System Configuration
Typical configurations use 4–12 SmCo magnets per motor in Sm2Co17 28 MGOe ring or arc-segment geometries. Target applications include robotic arms, end effectors, grippers, and automation systems requiring exceptional positioning accuracy.
Performance Characteristics
Stable magnetic output across operating temperature range. Precision positioning maintained over extended service intervals. High reliability in continuous production environments. Long service intervals reduce maintenance requirements.
Electric Vehicle Traction Motor Systems
Traction motors are the primary propulsion system in electric vehicles, operating under demanding thermal conditions while delivering high power output across variable duty cycles. SNT develops SmCo traction motor systems incorporating a rotor assembly, laminated core, high-efficiency stator, power electronics interface, and thermal management integration.
System Configuration
Passenger EV systems typically utilize 24–72 magnet segments weighing 2–6 kg. Commercial EV systems may require 48–120 segments at 5–15 kg. Preferred grades: Sm2Co17 30–32 MGOe. Installation points include main drive unit, e-axle assemblies, and commercial vehicle powertrains.
Performance Characteristics
High-temperature capability with stable performance above 200°C continuous. High power density in weight-constrained motor architectures. Resistance to demagnetization under sustained high-load operation. Extended motor service life across vehicle lifetime.
EV Thermal Management Compressor Systems
Thermal management systems regulate battery temperature, cabin climate, and power electronics cooling; they become more critical as battery capacity grows. High-speed electric compressors for these applications run continuously at elevated temperatures, making reliability and thermal stability the primary design constraints. SNT develops compressor motor systems integrating a SmCo rotor assembly, high-speed electric motor, compressor module, control electronics, and thermal interface components.
System Configuration
Typical configurations contain 6–16 SmCo magnets at 0.1–0.5 kg magnet content using Sm2Co17 28–30 MGOe grades. Applications include battery thermal management and HVAC systems in passenger and commercial electric vehicles.
Performance Characteristics
Continuous-duty operation at elevated temperatures. High RPM capability for compact compressor architectures. Reduced maintenance requirements over vehicle service life. Improved efficiency across variable speed ranges.
